2027 ALL-STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND CLINICIAN:

Dr. William Owens

A native of Gary, Indiana, William Owens, DMus (b. 1963), is a highly sought-after composer, clinician, and conductor throughout North America. Renowned for his practical and expressive compositional style, Dr. Owens has firmly established himself as a leading voice in the field. His catalog includes more than 500 works for concert band, string orchestra, and small ensemble, many of which appear on required music lists nationally and abroad. Many of his works have been analyzed in educational text, and have become staples of the wind band repertoire.

Active as a composer since 1993, Owens’ works have received widespread acclaim. Principal commissions include those from the South Plains College (TX) Department of Fine Arts, Phi Beta Mu International, and the American Bandmasters Association. A 1985 graduate of Chicago’s VanderCook College of Music, he is honored in the VCM Gallery of Distinguished Alumni. His accolades include the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Texas Bandmasters Association and the Doctor of Music Education Honoris Causa from his alma mater. Dr. Owens holds professional memberships with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB).

In 2014, William retired from his career as a band director in Texas after 30 years of service. In his spare time, he enjoys sight-seeing and is an American muscle car owner/enthusiast. William resides in Fort Worth, TX with his wife and best friend, Georgia.

LMEA MIDDLE SCHOOL ALL-STATE BAND

Each of the nine LMEA Districts will hold a district level 1st round qualifying audition to determine the students who will qualify for the 2nd round state level audition. 2nd round will be audio-recorded in each district.

DATE, TIME, FEES, and LOCATION for the 1st round audition are set by the District Director for his/her district.

INFORMATION ABOUT STATE LEVEL (2nd ROUND) AUDITIONS

The format of the Second Round audition is a Live Monitored Audition which will be submitted as an mp3 file. 

  • District directors will verify that teachers of all students participating in these auditions are current members of LMEA.
  • All “2nd round” auditions will be audio recorded by the District Director or his/her designee(s) and submitted as an mp3 file to the Division Chair for adjudication.

DEADLINES for 2026-27:

  • District Deadlines – District Directors will provide procedural information and set the deadline for receiving checks and student information from schools in their district.
  • Saturday, November 14, 2026 – Deadline for completion of all 2nd round auditions and the receipt of all student registrations and audition fees by the district director or his/her designee.
  • Monday, November 23, 2026 (by 11:59 pm) – Results for the Middle School All-State Band will be posted online. Registration forms for students selected to an ensemble will be opened once rosters are posted.
  • Wednesday, December 11, 2026 (by 11:59 pm) – Deadline for students selected to the Middle School All-State Band to complete their All-State registration.

AUDITION RESULTSResults will be posted on this website by November 23, 2026 or as soon as possible once they are finalized for all ensembles requiring wind and percussion players.
